Regional Rep Claude Rainville retiring following a decade of service with CAW Council 4000

Claude Rainville, CAW National Council 4000 Regional Representative for the Council’s St. Lawrence and Atlantic Region’s CN
membership, is retiring effective Canada Day - July 1st.
Brother Rainville has held the position since he was first elected in 1998 to replace Rick Johnston, who
also held the position of Regional Rep representing the CN St. Lawrence Region membership when he was
elected as the first President of Council 4000.  As wearing both hats became a struggle for Johnston, a
separate Regional Rep’s position was created and Brother Rainville was elected to what was his first of
four consecutive terms.

In 2003, Claude was assigned the additional responsibilities in servicing the CN Atlantic Region
membership and was duly elected by both the Atlantic (Local 4005) and St. Lawrence Region (Local 4004)
memberships during the Council’s Regional Representative elections in the spring of 2003.

Rainville lost a very close race in this year’s election on May 9th by just 8 votes to Jean Savard, who is
presently the Local Chairperson of the CN Intermodal membership in Montreal.  Savard takes over as
Regional Rep of the Council’s CN membership for the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Regions on July 2nd.

As Brother Rainville is now of retirement age with CN, he decided to retire instead of making a return to
CN where he was employed for many years in CN’s Accounting department at its Headquarters in
downtown Montreal, prior to joining Council 4000 full time.

Brother Rainville said that he was obviously disappointed with the results, and that it bothers him a bit in losing in such a close
race.  He would have liked to complete one last term.  But he also says that he leaves with many found memories and friendships
that he has developed through the time he’s been involved with the Council.  “I enjoyed my work, albeit it was becoming more
difficult, but I will also enjoy having more time with my wife and our new dog, and will have more time to work on my golf game,”
Rainville said.  He wished Brother Savard success in his future endeavours with the Council.

This is just one of a few changes that Council 4000 will see starting this summer.  Two new faces will also be seen out west on both
the Mountain and Prairie Regions with the recent elections of Dave Kissack, who will replace Dave Mercer-Hazlitt, who is retiring
from the Council but will return back to VIA Rail to work onboard The Canadian, and this past weekends second ballot election
where Dan Michaluk was elected to replace Rick Doherty, who is also retiring on July 1st.

We wish Brother Rainville all the best in his retirement from Council 4000 and CN, with good health and prosperity in the many
years that lie ahead for him and his loving wife.

Au revoir Claude!
