Past CAW Presidents Bob White and Buzz Hargrove speak to CAW Rail Conference delegates

Local leaders and delegates to the 2008 CAW Rail Conference were
surprised and honoured by the two guest speakers who dropped by to
speak during the hospitality night at this year's conference.

First CAW President (1985 - 1992) and former Canadian Labour
Congress President Bob White and recently retired President (1992 -
2008) Buzz Hargrove spoke to CAW Rail leaders and members at the
CAW Family Education Centre in Port Elgin, Ontario.

White and Hargrove spoke of the changes of the CAW since it was
established in 1985, following a break from the U.S. based United Auto
Workers Union.  Today, only 40% of the some 260,000 membership of
Canada's largest private sector, CAW-Canada, are auto workers.  The
remaining 60% of the overall membership are made up from various
other sectors such as air, health care, hospitality, manufacturing,
transportation and rail.

Hargrove spoke of the history of railway workers merging with the CAW,
first the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen, then followed by the Canadian
Brotherhood of Railway, Transport and General Workers Union.

Hargrove also spoke of some of the CAW's achievements and struggles in collective bargaining with Canada's railways.

It was clearly an honour to have Canada's two most respected and well known labour leaders attend and speak to the CAW Rail
membership.

Newly elected National President Ken Lewenza, who succeeded Buzz Hargrove on September 6, 2008, spoke to delegates the
following morning, opening the conference's events on September 13th.
