CAW Rail Conference wraps up as a success
 
Newly elected CAW National President Ken Lewenza spoke at this weekends
(Sept.12 to 14, 2008) CAW Rail Conference at the CAW Family Education Centre,
located on the shores of Lake Huron in Port Elgin, Ontario.

CAW National Council 4000 and its five Regional Locals across Canada sent
numerous delegates and Local leaders to this conference from the railway and
transportation sectors - VIA Rail, Rocky Mountaineer Vacations, Savage Alberta
Railway, CN and CN Transportation Ltd.

The conference focused on issues facing today's railway and transportation sectors.  
During the conference, the CAW CN leadership met and discussed the numerous
issues and challenges that plague all of the unions representing workers at CN.

Assistant to the CAW President, Bob Chernecki, advised delegates that Local leadership from
the Rail sector needs to meet in a similar forum sometime next year to prepare for bargaining
with VIA Rail Canada, whose current 3-year collective agreement expires at the end of 2009.  

This years Rail Conference also featured the following workshops:

  • Rail Safety
  • Ergonomics/Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)
  • CAW Skilled Trades Policies and Structures and how they relate to Rail  
  • General overview of Health & Safety for Local leadership

CAW National Council 4000 National Health & Safety Coordinator Ken Cameron was an
instructor at this year's conference, covering Health & Safety in the Federal sectors.
