CAW urges support for the United Way

With local United Way campaigns now underway, CAW Local Unions and members are being urged to support the United Way at a
time when the need has never been greater.

"We know all too well the negative impact the ongoing erosion of the manufacturing base is going to have on all our communities,"
said CAW President Ken Lewenza in a letter to CAW Local Union Presidents.

In some cases it will mean that those who were strong supporters of their local United Way campaigns in past, will now be looking
to United Way agencies for support.

If not for the United Way many community agencies established in response to community needs would fold.  Lewenza said the
CAW is determined to stop that from happening.

"None of us are immune," Lewenza said.  "If not impacted directly in some way, we see the social damage caused by these
problems on a daily basis.  Increasing poverty, particularly among the youngest and oldest in society, is but one manifestation of
this need.  The lack of affordable housing and the ensuing crisis of homelessness is another.  What are not so obvious perhaps are
the other symptoms: violence, alienation, substance abuse, neglect, etc."
