|CAW President Buzz Hargrove has been appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada for 2008. The announcement was made on
Canada Day, recognizing his more than 40 years as an advocate for working people and social justice causes across the country and
around the globe.
According to the correspondence of the Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Hargrove was
recognized “for his contributions as a labour leader who is respected on both sides of the bargaining table, and for his advocacy for
equality and human rights in Canada and abroad.”
Hargrove was named among other esteemed Canadians such as famed pro-choice advocate Dr. Henry Morgantaler, African-Canadian
author and poet George Elliott Clarke, former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna, former prime minister Kim Campbell, television
broadcaster Peter Mansbridge, musician Randy Bachman, former Supreme Court of Canada justice John C. Major and a number of
other social service and business leaders.
All those being honoured will receive the award at an official ceremony in Ottawa next spring. Hargrove said the award came as a
surprise and it was a great privilege to be recognized among such highly-regarded Canadians.
