|CAW and VIA Rail to resume negotiations May 14th
|The CAW and VIA Rail Canada have scheduled dates to recommence negotiations the week of May 14 in Montreal for Agreements
1 and 2 (CAW Council 4000) and Agreement 3 (CAW Local 100). Further talks have been scheduled for the week of May 28 at a
location yet to be determined. The CAW bargaining committees have recently applied for conciliation.
The CAW placed their negotiations with VIA on hold until they completed their bargaining with CN earlier in the year.
Bob Chernecki, assistant to CAW President Buzz Hargrove, in a CAW Rail membership communique Railfax, asked for support
from the full CAW union and membership to give the VIA workers their full support as they move to conclude negotiations.
As was the case during CN bargaining, the CAW will communicate on a regular basis by Railfax to the CAW leadership and
membership. Regular updates will also be posted on cawcouncil4000.com.
The CAW VIA Rail Bargaining Committee will include CAW Council 4000 Regional Representatives Heather Grant, Serge Auger, Danny Andru, and Dave
Mercer-Hazlitt, Council 4000 Secretary-Treasurer Bill Coolen, Council 4000 President Bob Fitzgerald, CAW National Staff Representative Doug Olshewski,
CAW Local 100 President Bryon DeBaets, Local 100 Vice-President Richard Brosseau, Local 100 Bargaining Representatives and Bob Chernecki.
The CAW is seeking support from other CAW railway members at CN, CP and Ontario Northland to provide their full support as negotiations at VIA continue.
The union remains confident that they will reach a settlement on behalf of their approximate 2,500 members at VIA Rail, which includes on-board customer and
train personnel, customer service and sales representatives, baggage and station personnel, and shop and maintenance employees.
