CAW Rail Conference delegates call on the Harper Government to properly fund VIA Rail
|The Stephen Harper Conservative government has under-funded VIA Rail to the point
where the repair and development of infrastructure is not possible, threatening the
long-term viability of the public service.
Delegates to the CAW Rail Conference held September 22 to 24 in Port Elgin, Ontario,
unanimously passed a resolution to have the CAW undertake a nation-wide campaign
to lobby all levels of government to protect the future of VIA Rail Canada as well the over
2,500 CAW members who are employed with the corporation (over 2,000 CAW Council
4000 members who work both on-board and off). The government must commit
long-term funding for the sustainability of our national and intercity passenger rail
service and to protect the thousands of Canadian jobs in this important sector.
|The resolution will be tabled at CAW Council in December. Read the resolution by clicking here [PDF]
