CAW Local 4005 Honours our Veterans in a big way this
2005 Year of the Veteran
November 21, 2005
Members of CAW Local 4005 at VIA Rail remembered Veterans in a big way on
their 60th anniversary.

Ron Jackson started to develop the idea of a special memorial train from
Halifax to Ottawa for this occasion about 8-months ago.  He enlisted four other
members: Peggy Topple, Nancy Risser, Jennifer Brown, and Joanne
Cameron, and together they organized a journey for the Veterans and their
families.

The journey began with a wonderful red carpet reception with a vast military
display of the war years.  Veterans were entertained with brass bands and
choirs.  Many dignitaries were there to shake hands with everyone as they
proceeded to the thirty-three (33) car train.

All the stops on the way to pick up more veterans included huge crowds waving
Canadian flags and Thank You signs.  They were warmly welcomed in
Montreal and with a grand scale welcome at the Ottawa train station.

After two nights in Ottawa participating in the Remembrance Day service at the
National War Memorial and a visit to the Canadian War Museum and other
places of interest, it was bon voyage from Ottawa and the trip back home for
over 300 Veterans plus family members and friends.  They received a hero's
welcome when they departed the train at their stops.

Special thanks for all members of VIA Rail in local 4005 and local 4004 that
went out of their way to honour these Veterans, and for making them feel
welcomed and remembered.
