May 1, 2005
Prime Minister Paul Martin met with CAW president Buzz
Hargrove, CAW Council president Ken Lewenza and Labour
Minister Joe Fontana at the CAW Local 444 union hall in
Windsor, Ontario.

The candid meeting focused on the importance of Parliament
completing its work on a wide range of issues that affect
working families, including:

  • a national, not-for-profit childcare program,

  • a pension guarantee fund to guarantee workers’ pensions
    when employers close or go bankrupt with an
    underfunded pension plan;

  • completing arrangements for previously announced
    investment programs at GM and Ford;

  • investing in a new paint shop at the Chrysler mini-van plant in Windsor;

  • same sex marriage legislation;

  • a pan-Canadian aerospace strategy to secure the Bombardier C-series production;

  • the Crab fishery crisis in Newfoundland & Labrador;

  • improvements to Canada’s unemployment insurance system.

The leaders discussed completing negotiations to achieve an agreement between the NDP and Liberals to keep Parliament
working on these important issues.
