CAW announces a tentative deal reached with CP Rail
The CAW CP Rail Bargaining Committee announced today (January 27, 2008) that following months of bargaining with CP Rail on a new collective agreement, the parties have reached a tentative agreement subject to ratification by the 2,500 CAW members at CP Rail. The tentative deal was reached two days in advance of the scheduled strike deadline set for midnight January 29th.
The union was successful in moving CP off all their tabled concessions. A troublesome area of this round of negotiations centered on the skilled trades. CP revealed that the electrical trade would be continually downsized into the future. The parties were able to reach an understanding that includes in-house training for rail car mechanics, diesel mechanics, trainees, apprentices and the merger of the electrical and diesel mechanic trade over the life of the agreement. The new tentative agreement contains full and complete procedure on this issue including a significant skilled trades wage increase and full and complete training.
Details of the tentative agreement will be provided to members during ratification meetings that will be held across the country. A schedule for ratification will be released shortly. The full CAW CP Rail leadership from coast to coast will be in Toronto on Wednesday and Thursday, January 30th and 31st, to review the tentative agreement.
