CAW reaches tentative agreement with VIA Rail avoiding strike action
|
Only 24-hours before the July 22nd strike deadline, the CAW reached a tentative agreement with VIA Rail.
The CAW's VIA Rail leadership from across Canada will arrive in Montreal on Monday to review and discuss the new agreement. Ratification meetings will begin shortly thereafter.
CAW VIA Rail members have been without collective agreements since all three expired on December 31, 2006. The two parties have been in negotiations since October 2006 and have been working with the assistance of two federal conciliators.
The 2,600 CAW members at VIA had voted for a strike deadline of July 22nd at 00:01 hours if an agreement could not be reached.
The CAW Bargaining Committees (Council 4000 and Local 100) believes that this is an excellent agreement on behalf of their members and unanimously recommends the ratification of this tentative agreement.
