UTU holds Strike Rally at Walker Yard in Edmonton - Hundreds show up to show their support
|
The UTU held a Strike Rally at CN's Walker Yard in Edmonton on Saturday, February 17, 2007. Various labour organizations, unions (including CAW) and the NDP MLA for Edmonton-Calder, David Eggan, took part in the rally. Approximately 300 people participated, which saw the City of Edmonton close the east-bound lane of 127 Avenue, which runs alongside Walker Yard.
Guest speakers at the rally were UTU Local 1233 Chairperson Greg Alm; Alberta NDP MLA David Eggan; CAW National Council 4000 Regional Representative Barry Kennedy; Edmonton District Labour Council President Tom Olenik; Les Steele of the Canadian Labour Congress; Alberta Federation of Labour President Gil McGowan and UTU Alberta Legislative Board Chairperson Mike Melymick.
The UTU conveyed to those at the rally that safety concerns, improving the quality of life for UTU members and better treatment from CN are key strike issues.
Many family and friends showed up, as well as union members from CAW Council 4000; CAW Local 100; CAW Local 4050; CEP Local 777; the Alberta Nurses Union; IWW, PSAC and others. Everyone encouraged the UTU membership in attendance to keep up their fight and wished them success in their struggle to achieve a satisfactory collective agreement with CN.
